When Pantone released the color of the year early in December 2019, there was a little rumbling and low murmurs of questioning that moved in a slow wave around the Internet. A few hearty approvals, some head nods were noticed above the soft shock waves of disappointed designers around the globe. Classic Blue just didn't sound like a 2020 color. 2020 is the future after all, right? We may not have flying cars or robot maids, but 2020 is like a far off distant time waxing into the present moment, I think most people were thinking the color would be more... energetic.

Like a lot of media writers and designers, I signed up for the Pantone Color of the Year webinar to find out about the choice for a couple of reasons. 1. Because it's the Pantone Color of the Year (duh) 2. I wanted to know why Classic Blue?

As the presentation moved forward with matte indigo fashion images and interior design set the stage for the explanation, I listened with intent to the presenter. In a world that seems broiling with uncertainty, there is a need for calm, stability, reliability, and Classic Blue epitomizes these qualities. Rich, deep, calm, resolute, trustworthy, Classic Blue helps tell stories that give a sense of comfort.
